Privacy? Do we have it in Internet?

What is internet privacy?

Let's look at a common cyber citizens will often look at, the Wikipedia.

"Internet privacy involves the desire or mandate of personal privacy concerning transactions or transmission of data via the Internet. It also involves the exercise of control over the type and amount of information revealed about a person on the Internet and who may access said information."

So this is what it says about internet privacy, but do we really have privacy on the cyberspace?

Although rules and ethics that are some times vague were set for us, we tend to ignore it.

The most common example is about the privacy policy that is very common in many website.

People tend to not read it, and violating the rules without knowing.

One case is seen from this blog post which talking about how people are not suppose to post threatening contents which are stated in the policy.

But surprisingly, the blog provider didn't want to remove the post even it is reported.

So, is this a dilemma of some sort? Very confusing to a certain level.

People tend to take internet privacy lightly, and assume many things. They don't realize the serious consequences from violating it.

Example of this news where a husband accessed into his wife's email to check on her.

He didn't know that could land him in jail for 5 years!

Appearently the privacy online is treated as per individuals, relations are not counted.

But how many knows it?

Perhaps the online platform is a space that are not clear or real to many of us, people feel "safe" to distribute personal information without realizing it could do same harm and damage as what we do in real life. Information and even identity, personal photos etc. are distributed widely on social media platforms. How much risks that can be? Personal information are literally floating in the cyber space freely for anyone to grab on to. We don't have the control of it once it have floated out there.

Interestingly, once there's a service call Web 2.0 Suicide Machine which claimed if anyone want to disappear from the digital world, they can help. I think it'd been shut down now.

Would this kind of service like some secret agent service?

Ha! How interesting.

But still, it is still developing and moving on at this very moment on this issue for internet privacy. People need to know more and not be ignorant.

I would consider myself quite involved in the digital world but not an avid user perhaps.
I might not be the kind of Facebook or the Twitter user like any other young adults nowadays, but digital and technology have been a big part of my life for many years.

It is fascinating for me how people got so into social media like facebook, they are willing to share everything from their own photos, status, even current location. So and years ago, we were still talking very seriously about privacy? Time to re-think now.

Ever since I own my first Windows base... Oh wait, I have start to use the PC before even I start with Windows. I remember the era of Dos. The text inputting OS. Where games are still in mono-colors. Ahh, those were the days! What I want to say is, my life have ever since so involved with digital stuffs. From computers, to handphones, to entertainment devices, to musical instruments, all are digital things that related to technology.

People even uses IP phones other then conventional phones now.
For me, I really love the smartphone (Windows base user though) but now it's dead once I reach Hong Kong.
I had my GPS installed in it, and it's always very very useful to me if I wanted to go somewhere I don't know.
I come to realize. I rely alot on it a lot

Many things have transformed from traditional or analogue to digital within the short span for perhaps 10 to 20 years. The days we used to still watch VHS tapes have now all become blu-ray disc. The good old days of our CRT TVs that we have in our homes, now becomes at least LCD TV, and now even 3D TVs. The world just moved so fast!

Even at work, company and clients might keep in contact through MSN, other then the email. Very convenient.

Through this course, I think I would understand more how people use the new technology in literacies or transform from traditional medium to new medium. It'll be great to understand more the movement of this issue, and input more about how things works and done.
